Upper Badlands has sourced the land and signed lease deals with Lindsay-area property owners for the wind project.

The land is sectioned off to ensure the development project has strategic turbine micro-siting considerations as well as infrastructure to sustain the project.

Transmission

As any wind development project is pre-planned, it is not only important to study how the turbines will be placed on the land but also to whom the energy will be sold and how the energy is transmitted. Upper Badlands became more of a tangible project when Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) signed the association agreement with Southwest Power Pool (SPP) in late 2015. SPP transmits and controls energy supplied to the mid-western portion of the United States. The interconnection agreement signed with SPP will give Upper Badlands the authority and a path to market and sell the renewable energy that is transmitted over the WAPA line into the SPP control area. As of early 2021, the study stage is in the DISIS-GEN-2017-109 queue position.

The Upper Badlands project will connect on-site into the 230Kv Line that links from the Fort Peck Dam to the Glendive Regional Sub Station Complex.
